LM23 Rating: Like everyone else, I'm going to the movies
I’ve seen most of the Spider-Man movies. Just like the other DC or Marvel films, I watch what I can, but I have no understanding of their origins the way true comic book fans do. I watched the Tobey Maguire ones but skipped the Andrew Garfield ones. I totally forgot Andrew Garfield was even Spider-Man and can’t really remember what happened in the Tobey Maguire iterations.
I do remember flying to London the night before and then trying to stay awake during Spider-Man 3. All I remember is at one point, Tobey and James Franco were best buddies and then I woke up and suddenly James Franco is the bad guy. I paid more attention to Spider-Man when Tom Holland took over as I think Spider-Man benefitted from the superhero coolness the way the other Marvel films have.
And so all over online there’s been rumors about Tobey and Andrew appearing in the latest Spider-Man and causing diehard fans to lose their brain cells, but in the most awesomest way. It’s hard to believe 2021 is almost done when it seemed like we were all promised that 2021 was going to be the year to make up for 2020. But who knew 2021 was almost like 2020 in that most of the big movies were pushed yet again to 2022.
I was very surprised to hear that Spider-Man: No Way Home was going to be released this year and just in the nick of time before The Matrix: Resurrections caps off another strange spotty year of movies and entertainment. But beyond the excitement of another big film being available at the movies, I don’t have much motivation to see the next installment of Spider-Man.
So the new trailer that dropped today reveals all of the bad guys who have come from other universes in search of Peter Parker. We see Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), and Lizard (Rhys Ifans). It does sort of make sense to bring back the Peter Parkers from days past if all of these bad guys from back in the day are suddenly coming back.
Like what we’ve been experiencing in the last several years, nostalgia and resurrecting tried and true past favorites is the way to automatically guarantee some reassurance that a movie will be good. I’m here for it. Or should I say, I’m here for all of them.
It appears that in this third Spider-Man with Tom Holland, it looks like Peter Parker wanted to go back to being normal and Dr. Strange grants his wish. But somehow by doing so, all of the bad guys from yesteryear show up on his door step and so the battle begins. We also see quick shots of May Parker (Marisa Tomei), Happy (Jon Favreau), and J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons). This Spider-Man is definitely stuffed with a lot of real star power (sorry, Eternals).
The only critique I have is that the trio of high school friends just seem so much younger than everyone else in the film. I’m surprised there isn’t a younger or youngish villain to balance out the old school crew.
But anyway, it’s going to be a great Christmas with Spider-Man: No Way Home and Matrix: Resurrections being released the week before the holidays.
