Movie Trailer Review: Umma

LM23 Rating: Rent it as soon as it’s available.

There were some big disappointments in the horror movie genre last year. The biggest was the last Conjuring movie. I’m still down for any sequels, but I totally thought a Conjuring movie with a trigger word like “devil” in it would mean some scary business. Nope. Total let down. And let’s not get started Halloween Kills. More like Halloween yawn…

I thought the next scary movie to watch was going to be The Telephone, but no, there’s apparently a new one starring the great Sandra Oh! On my way back from Disneyland one year, I actually saw Sandra Oh at LAX. I was waiting to board the plane that she had just come off of. It was really random and cool.

Umma is a scary movie that has Sandra Oh playing a woman who appears to live on a large piece of land in which she also uses to make honey. She lives there with her daughter. One day, a man drives a little too close to her house and drops off a chest containing her dead mother.

Sandra is not cool with this as she has spent her life avoiding her mother. She did not care for her Umma it seems and wanted nothing to do with her. But Umma has other plans even in the afterlife.

I’m disappointed that there hasn’t been more advertising and awareness for Umma. The trailer looks really solid. The glimpses of the supernatural don’t look fake or boring. And because it’s based on Korean beliefs about the dead, you know it’s going to be scary.

Umma doesn’t appear to be coming to a theatre near where I live, so I’ll definitely rent this as soon as it’s available.
