LM23 Rating: All I know is I’m going to see it
The early part of the year is my least favorite not just because it’s the post holiday blagh period, but also it’s the time when Hollywood tends to release random filler films until the spring/summer blockbusters take charge.
Seeing a trailer with the words written and directed by Jordan Peele elicits the excitement and anticipation that a film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan used to (sorry M. Night). A new master of horror and suspense has arisen and in a futuristic and other worldly way, and that’s Mr. Jordan Peele.
I was up late night when I saw that there was trailer for Nope available on YouTube. I saw that it was by Jordan Peele, so I was like okay let’s check this out. The trailer opens with a very bubbly and upbeat Keke Palmer reminding us that the first images made into film featured a Black man on a horse. I can’t help but feel weirded out because I recall learning about this in a course I took in data visualization.
Palmer tells us that the man is her great, great, great grandfather. Behind her holding onto a horse is a decidedly unimpressed Daniel Kaluuya. Palmer then tells us that they are part of the only Black-owned horse trainers in Hollywood. The trailer goes on with its upbeat beat until the music stops…literally.
Darkness falls in this remote ranch area and it seems there’s something arriving to the town that is particularly sinister. We don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s aliens from a space ship as there’s glimpses of what seems like an alien hand and what seems like a space ship landing.
But whatever the movie is about, it’s got horses and Hollywood in the mix and so come this July, we’re all going to find out.
