New Movies

Sundance Film Festival darling, PAST LIVES from feature film director Celine Song opens nationwide this weekend. The A24 indie film is following in the footsteps of last year’s Oscar winning smash, EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE.

It’s continuing to wow critics and creating Oscar buzz despite being released so early in the year and with the pending releases of prestige juggernauts from Martin Scorsese and Christopher Nolan.

New On Streaming

Marvel’s SECRET INVASION is finally here and the show is packed with A-list stars including Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Cobie Smulders, Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, Don Cheadle, and Dermot Mulroney.

Surprise Gems On Streaming

Netflix

J.C. Chandor’s Kraven the Hunter was all in the news this week, but he’s also responsible for directing Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, and Pedro Pascal in the same movie in 2019’s TRIPLE FRONTIER. Don’t be put off by the totally boring and generic title. This movie has a Band of Brothers-Saving Private Ryan-Traffic-Heat vibe that you never saw coming.

Disney Plus

John Stamos is the MVP of highly entertaining series that don’t seem to last longer than a season or two. The amazing BIG SHOT has been pulled from Disney Plus, but the even more underrated GRANDFATHERED is luckily still available. Stamos plays an aging playboy restauranteur who is surprised to learn he’s not only a father, but a grandfather thanks to his long lost son played by the impeccable, Josh Peck. It’s a tiny bit of Full House, but it’s mostly got the grown up acerbic humor the way UGLY BETTY has. It’s less schmaltz and more sarcasm, but whip smart and with some heart.

News & Notes

The summer box office is off to a shaking start with both THE FLASH and ELEMENTAL failing to bring audiences to the movies.

TOM CRUISE is back on the big screen in July with MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: DEAD RECKONING PART 1. The next installment of the 20-year plus franchise premiered in Rome and is projected for a $90 million opening weekend.

James Cameron, famed director of The Abyss, Avatar, and Titanic, shared his expertise as to why the Titan submersible’s journey to view the Titanic was doomed.

Dermot Mulroney shows his support for the Writer’s strike by politely walking off the stage after his View interview is concluded.

Yet another superhero/comic book movie is coming our way this year with KRAVEN THE HUNTER starring Aaron Taylor Johnson. The movie stands out notably for its R rating.

Thanks for taking the time to read this week’s entertainment roundup!

For this week’s reward, check out everyone’s favorite 80’s alien, Alf, and his quest for a hobby.
