There was a recent remake of the rough around the edges Christmas special that served as the unofficial pilot the The Waltons TV series...I advise watching the original.
It’s quite a feat for a TV movie to convey the lives of a rural, God fearing and loving family in the Depression era of Virginia. Despite being set in the 1930’s, the Waltons are way ahead of their time and possibly even more ahead of time than some of those who are living today.
The eldest son, John Boy, is sensitive and writes stories. Not something you’d expect from a poor country boy in the south. The best part has to be when the dad makes it home alive and gives his son notebooks, so he can write his stories.
We take so granted that paper is in abundance, but it was rare back in those days for a poor family in the Depression. I’m also always impressed when I see a show from way back in the day and they feature people of color.
In the times that we are living in now, it makes you wonder if we can get back to the basics and what is shown in The Homecoming.
