One of the OG’s of livestreaming from the streets of New York City. Like the other creators I now follow, I can’t quite recall how I came up on this channel. I’m a huge fan of NYC as I’ve been there a million zillion times and so that may be how I was served videos from this channel.

During the pandemic, I was living by myself in an apartment in a big city and my social life was pretty much my friends and many whom I worked with. We were colleagues and friends inside and outside of work friends. I was also only one of the few ones who worked in the central area of the city and so once the lockdown hit, it wasn’t possible to meet up with anyone. I was also really paranoid of going near people as I already don’t like being around too many people or having people come too near me even before pandemic times, so I was totally fine with being by myself in my apartment.

At that time, to contain my boredom, I started to watch random livestreams. First it was a lot of news conferences from the New York Governor and Mayor and then it became random livestreams based in New York. Then when Chadwick Boseman passed away, I started to watch a lot of livestreams that centered around Marvel movies. And like everyone else, I started to expand on my culinary skills and began watching a bunch of food related channels.

It’s still ironic and funny to me that when social media livestreams first became available, the work that I did, we treated it as a novelty and then due to low results, we just stopped them altogether. I didn’t think it was worthwhile except for a news type of situation. It’s very funny that several years later with the pandemic and being isolated, I found myself consuming and preferring livestreams because being live with someone made me feel as if I was hanging out with people or not missing out on anything. I still feel so let down when I hit refresh and see that the livestream has finished.

One prolific livestreamer is ActionKid or also known as AK to his faithful viewers. AK’s YouTube channel has a combo of both livestreams and edited vlogs. But you can be sure to catch a livestream from AK almost every single day. There are times when AK is travelling and he will still livestream when he steps off the plane. Like this past summer, he was in California for about a month, and he was already back on the New York schedule and livestreaming the next morning.

He’s like a power walker and power livestreamer. AK is fearless in how he films. What you see is what you get from his perspective. He doesn’t shrink from filming unless of course filming is not allowed or if someone asks to not be filmed. You can tell that AK treats his profession as a YouTube content creator very seriously. If there’s a special event happening like a parade, if there’s a storm, if there’s a neighborhood to be seen no matter how “dangerous”, AK is live and at the scene.

And AK doesn’t just only walk during his livestreams. He sometimes is on his bike or e-scooter. He’s sometimes on a bus. He’s sometimes on a plane. He’s sometimes on a subway. Who needs those clunky weird VR head set things when you got a real human perspective from AK?

I also love how there is a true feeling of respect and community amongst YouTubers who are from the same area. AK has introduced me to so many other YouTubers also from NYC who I now follow and all are surprisingly really different in their delivery even if they’re touring the same neighborhood or same event. One of my favorite livestreams was last Christmas when AK went live with three other big NYC YouTubers (Urbanist: Exploring Cities, Walk Ride Fly, and The NYC Walking Show) and they all did back to back livestreams on each other’s channels. It was epic in how they handled it. It was so fun being able to join along them as the group of guy friends walked around the city during the holiday season. I totally felt as if I was out with my friends and having fun on a weekend and getting drinks and snacks.

AK has also featured other great YouTubers that I follow like James & Karla, SuperFriends and the City, and Jaycation. What is great about AK (real name Kenneth) is that despite his enormous success, he will still shout out and partner regularly with other YouTubers who may not be as successful as him. But really what is so great and enjoyable about channels like ActionKid is that you can feel and sense how much AK loves sharing his exploits with his viewers and he’s game for anything.

I know people may not understand why people can watch hours of someone else’s slice of life that can sometimes be about “nothing.” But I can say that for me, I get a sense of community like I’m hanging out with someone when I’m not actually able to. I also get to see more of what’s happening in a city I love like NYC or another place I’ve never been to, but it’s not edited and sanitized like what you would see in a broadcast program or a brand backed by advertisers. I like seeing everything and anything. And with livestreamers like AK, you’ll get to see things that those major brands would never bother covering unless there was some sort of hook connected to it. I know I much preferred watching all of the livestreamer’s POV of the parade for the first responders in NYC versus probably what was shown on the cable channels.

So if you’re interested in learning more about the nooks and crannies of neighborhoods of major cities like NYC and Los Angeles and Boston and other places around the world, definitely check out ActionKid.
