TRAILER REVIEW: Lightyear

LM23 Rating: Seeing it opening weekend.

One of the sad moments of going to Disneyland was when we got in line to take a picture with Buzz Lightyear and he then went for his coffee break and Jessie took over for his shift. I couldn’t believe it. I was like, where are you going, Buzz?!? The other not so cool moment of the Disneyland experience was when I thought I was going to fall out of the ride at Goofy’s Sky School. The rickety, jerky, squeaky outdoor ride was the scariest ride I’ve ever been on at any amusement park.

But back to Lightyear.

I thought I had heard somewhere that Chris Evans was going to play Buzz Lightyear. I just didn’t realize it was a true story and that the Toy Story spin off was going to be a reality so soon. Since when did Summer 2022 sound so soon?!?

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the teaser trailer is that Buzz is not a toy but an actual man. The animation is done in such a way that the cartoons look less cartoony and more manly. It’s more like how the characters look like in Soul. I’m not certain how I feel about that.

The younger, hipper Buzz really does match the real life man behind the voice, Chris Evans, and way less like the older, more conservative Tim Allen from the Toy Story movies. In the short preview, we see Buzz at work with his friends (both human and feline) living their lives and doing their thing on the campus and in the beyond.

Strangely, the shots of Buzz and his crew on land don’t seem earthly. It’s as if they’re somewhere on Mars or some other world until Buzz blasts off into space. There’s just something not all quite there in the teaser. Meaning the setting of Lightyear is really mysterious and you can’t lock down exactly where the setting of Lightyear is.

What’s perhaps even more surprising is Lightyear, at least with the teaser, seems geared towards adults. Except for the cute orange cat, which looks a tad like the fat cat in Soul, there’s really not a lot of warm and fuzzy and cute characters in Lightyear. Even Buzz doesn’t look cute and funny the way Buzz looks like in the Toy Story movies and how he was like at Disneyland. There’s also not a lot of colorful bright colors in the animation. The style seems almost dark.

But yeah, I can’t say the teaser makes me clap my hands and get excited and then annoyed because the movie won’t be out for another 6 months. But since it’s a Pixar movie and it’s an origin story about a Toy Story character, I’ll be there. Although I do say that I’m surprised they didn’t make a Woody origin story as the first Toy Story spinoff. Maybe I’m just not a fan of space and things related to space (remember in my trailer review of The Matrix: Resurrections, I explained my phobia of science fiction and being stuck in another realm), but I think Woody’s life before meeting Andy would’ve been more cool to explore.

Anyway, regardless of my dislike of space and the infinity and beyond, I’ll still be at the theatres opening weekend to watch.
